What Causes Deviated Septum?

A deviated septum occurs when the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates your nostrils is off-center or crooked, partially or completely blocking airflow through one or both nostrils. Some people are born with a deviated septum, while others develop one due to trauma, such as a broken nose from sports, accidents, or falls. Over time, the septum can also shift due to aging or natural developmental changes, making breathing increasingly difficult.

What Causes Enlarged Turbinates?

Enlarged turbinates, or inferior turbinate hypertrophy, occur when the structures inside your nose that filter and humidify air become swollen, restricting airflow. Common causes include chronic allergies, sinus infections, and irritants like dust, smoke, or pollution. Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy or puberty, can also contribute. Overuse of nasal sprays like Afrin may cause rebound swelling, worsening congestion. If left untreated, enlarged turbinates can lead to chronic nasal blockage, snoring, and sleep disturbances.
