Is LASIK the right choice for your vision correction?

LASIK FAQs

1. What is LASIK?

LASIK is a laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea—the clear front part of the eye—so light focuses properly on the retina. This improves vision and reduces the need for glasses or contact lenses.

2. What symptoms or problems does it help?

LASIK corrects common vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Many people choose it to gain more freedom from glasses or contacts in daily life.

3. Am I a good candidate?

You may be a candidate if you are over 18, have healthy eyes, and a stable glasses or contact lens prescription. People with very thin corneas, severe prescriptions, or certain eye conditions may not qualify. Your eye doctor will confirm with a full exam.

4. Does it hurt? What kind of numbing or anesthesia is used?

No, LASIK is not painful. Numbing drops are used to keep your eyes comfortable. You may feel some pressure for a few seconds, but no sharp pain during the procedure.

5. How long does it take, and where is it done?

The surgery usually takes 10–15 minutes per eye and is performed in an outpatient setting. You go home the same day and need someone to drive you.

6. What is recovery like? When can I get back to normal?

Most patients notice clearer vision within 24 hours, though full recovery may take a few weeks. You’ll need to use special eye drops and avoid rubbing your eyes. Many people return to work within 1–2 days.

7. When will I notice results, and how long do they last?

Most people notice improved vision almost immediately. Results are long-lasting, but normal age-related changes like needing reading glasses (presbyopia) can still occur later in life.

8. What are the risks or side effects?

LASIK is very safe, but possible side effects include dry eyes, glare, or halos around lights. Serious complications are rare. Your surgeon will review potential risks with you before the procedure.

9. Will I still need glasses or other treatments afterward?

Many patients no longer need glasses or contacts for distance vision. Some may still need them for fine tasks or reading as they age. In some cases, an enhancement procedure may be done if needed.

10. What happens at the first appointment?

Your eye doctor will perform detailed tests to measure your eyes, check corneal thickness, and review your prescription. This helps determine if LASIK is safe and effective for you.
