Is balloon sinuplasty the right choice for your sinus issues?

1. What is balloon sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens blocked sinus passages using a small balloon. The balloon gently expands the sinus openings, allowing trapped mucus to drain and air to flow freely again—without removing bone or tissue.

2. What symptoms or problems does it help?

It’s designed for people with chronic sinus issues like congestion, pressure, headaches, nasal blockage, and infections that keep coming back even after medication.

3. Am I a good candidate?

You may be a candidate if you have chronic sinus infections, sinus pressure, or difficulty breathing through your nose despite trying medications or sprays. Your ENT doctor can confirm with an exam or CT scan.

4. Does it hurt? What kind of numbing or anesthesia is used?

Most patients describe only mild pressure, not pain. It’s typically done in the office under local anesthesia with numbing spray and medication to keep you comfortable.

5. How long does it take, and where is it done?

The procedure usually takes about 20 minutes and is performed right in the ENT’s office. You can go home the same day and don’t need a hospital stay.

6. What is recovery like? When can I get back to normal?

Recovery is quick—most people return to work or daily activities within a day or two. You may have mild congestion or drainage for a short time, but most discomfort is minimal.

7. When will I notice results, and how long do they last?

Many patients breathe easier within days, and results often last for years. Because it widens the sinus openings, long-term relief is common, especially when combined with proper sinus care.

8. What are the risks or side effects?

Side effects are rare but can include temporary swelling, minor bleeding, or infection. Your ENT will discuss how to care for your sinuses after the procedure to minimize these risks.

9. Will I still need medications or other treatments afterward?

Some patients may still use nasal sprays or allergy treatments to manage inflammation, but many need less medication after balloon sinuplasty. Your doctor will guide you on maintenance care.

10. What happens at the first appointment?

Your ENT will review your symptoms, check your nose and sinuses, and may order imaging to confirm the source of blockage. If you’re a candidate, they’ll explain the procedure and what to expect before, during, and after treatment.
