What Causes Ongoing Ear Infections?

Chronic ear infections usually happen when fluid can’t drain from the middle ear, trapping bacteria and causing repeat pain, pressure, and hearing problems.

Children are especially at risk, since their ear structures are still developing—making blockages more likely and infections harder to shake.

Without the right treatment, these infections can return again and again, potentially leading to things like hearing loss or speech delays. Stop the cycle for good—schedule your child’s visit today.

How In-Office Ear Tubes Work

In-office ear tube placement is a minimally-invasive procedure that gently places a tiny ear tube to stop infections and help your child hear and feel better.

A small device is placed at the ear canal and, with a quick motion, the tube is inserted—no general anesthesia and no operating room needed.

It’s a fast treatment with almost no recovery time—most kids are back to normal before you leave the office.

"We had such a great experience with Dr. Agan and the Hummingbird ear tube procedure she performed for our 1 year old daughter. We came from out of town and we were able to do a virtual consult beforehand."

Common Questions

How long does the procedure take and what’s the recovery like?

The ear tube placement takes just a few minutes in the office. Most children can return to school or play right away, with no recovery downtime needed.

Will insurance cover this procedure?

At Scottie, we do not directly contract with insurance companies, however, we strive to simplify the process of reimbursement for you by supplying the necessary diagnostic codes (ICD-10) and procedure codes (CPT). These codes can be used when you file your own insurance claim, potentially contributing to your out-of-network benefits. You should check with your insurance company for more information.

Does ear tube placement hurt?

Depending on the device used for your child's ear tube placement, numbing of the eardrum may be painful, but only for a few seconds (much like getting a shot).

"The surgery and recovery process were handled with exceptional attention, and we received daily calls to check on our daughter’s progress. That level of personal care is rare and so appreciated. "

-Paula W.

How do I know if my child needs ear tubes?

1/4

Children who have frequent ear infections, trouble hearing, or fluid in their ears that doesn’t go away may be good candidates for ear tubes.

If your child has had three or more ear infections in six months—or if antibiotics haven’t helped—tubes may be recommended.

A doctor can look at your child’s symptoms and examine their ears to help decide if ear tubes are the right choice.

Is ear tube placement safe for my child?

2/4

Yes, in-office ear tube placement is designed to be very safe, especially for young children.

It is done right in the office, uses local numbing instead of general anesthesia, and takes only a few minutes.

Most children do very well and go back to normal activities the same day.

Will my child feel pain or be scared during the procedure?

3/4

The only pain your child will experience lasts only a few seconds during the numbing of the ear, much like getting a shot.

The procedure is very quick, and many kids are surprised at how easy it is.

Your child stays with you the whole time, and our team works to keep them calm and comfortable.

How soon will my child feel better after getting ear tubes?

4/4

Many parents notice improvements in their child’s symptoms within days—sometimes even right away.

Ear tubes can help prevent future infections, reduce ear pain, and improve hearing.

Most kids return to daycare or school immediately and sleep better without constant ear problems.
